Brief Introduction of Department of Sanskrit, Hemvati Nandan Bahuguna Garhwal Central

With the establishment of Garhwal University in 1973, the Sanskrit department was also  established. Since the inception of the University, Sanskrit-Department is running graduate, post-graduate courses and research work. In all the three campuses of the University (Srinagar, Tehri, Pauri)  facilities for study and research work of Sanskrit subjects are available. Semester system is applicable in undergraduate and postgraduate classes. According to the C.B.C.S. system, the C.B.C.S. curriculum prepared by the U.G.C. in six semesters was adopted in the year 2016 with certain changes, from the point of view of skill development, students are made to study useful courses like Ayurveda, Indian Theater, Patanjali Yogsutra, Vastu Shastra. The courses taught at graduation and post-graduation are helpful in building an ideal society and nation by developing morality in the students. From the session 2022-2023, new courses are being taught to the students under the National Education Policy-2020 at the graduate level in The university. Topics related to various branches of Sanskrit (Poetry, Poetry, Vedas, Puranas, Upanishads, Theology, Grammar, Linguistics) are being selected by research students. Behind the establishment of the Sanskrit-Department, the founders have had a broad vision, that Sanskrit language is the only source of in-depth knowledge of India, ancient history, society, knowledge-science, religion-philosophy etc. Many books related to Vedas, Puranas, Grammar, Theology, Philosophy, Crafts, War, Technology, Painting, Vocabulary, Ethics, Literature and Ayurveda have been recited in this. On the basis of these books written thousands of years ago, the present knowledge Ganga is flowing in the form of Ajsra. Knowledge of Sanskrit is useful for scholars of all disciplines in the modern age. First of all, Dr. Krishna Kumar, a famous litterateur and eminent scholar of Sanskrit, was the head of the Sanskrit-Department, he had a special contribution in the field of research and literature. Among other outgoing departmental headsand professors, eminent scholar of philosophy Prof. Ram Pratap Tiwari, scholar of grammar Prof. Dwarika Prasad Tripathi, scholar of literature Prof. Vineet Ghildiyal etc. enriched the department with their long-term services. In the session 2018-2019, the non-formal Sanskrit conversation center was also operated by the department in collaboration with the Rastriya Sanskrit Sansthan, New Delhi.
