(High Altitude Plant Physiology Research Centre)

ESTABLISHMENT

High Altitude Plant Physiology Research Centre (HAPPRC) was established in July 1979 by the University of Garhwal under section 4 of the U.P. State University Act 1973 at the initiative of its Founding Director Padma Shri Prof. A.N. Purohit.  The Centre has an Alpine Research Station at Tungnath (3600m asl) and an analytical laboratory at Srinagar (550m asl). Besides the Alpine Research Station, Centre has also established Germplasm conservation place (1.0 ha.) at Baniyakund (2460 m asl) Chopta, Herbal garden (2.0 ha.) at Pothibasa (2200 m asl) and a Model nursery at Lamkundi; Kulsari (1200 m asl).

Based on the quality of work done at the Centre and the progress made within a decade of its establishment, HAPPRC was conferred with autonomous status within the University by the Executive Council of the University on 23.04.1990 following the recommendations of the Committee of experts constituted for the purpose.  After assessing the performance of the Centre, time to time the autonomy was further extended by the Executive Council of the University.

INFRASTRUCTARAL FACILITES

The Centre has its Main Building and Laboratory at Srinagar Garhwal and Field Station at
Tungnath.  The main building at Srinagar is well equipped with analytical laboratories (800 sq. m.), glass house, green house, polyhouse and net house.  A well established tissue culture laboratory and a separate Biotechnology Laboratory is housed in the premises of main campus.

A Tree Germplasm collection having 70 mountain tree species planted over an approximate area of 5 hectare land is being maintained by the Centre at Srinagar.

The Alpine Research Station of the Centre in 10 acres land is situated at Tungnath (3600 m asl).  This Station has residential facilities and Weather Monitoring System. At present the Garden at this station has about 50 rare species of alpine herbs and more are being added to this collection on regular basis.  In addition to this, Centre has been established Germplasm conservation place (1.0 ha.) at Baniyakund (2460 m a.s.l.) Chopta district Rudraparyag, Herbal garden (2.0 ha.) for medicinal and aromatic plants at Pothibasa (2200 m asl) in district Rudraprayag and Model Nursery at Lamkundi; Kulsari (1200 m asl) district Chamoli.

In addition to the normal laboratory equipments, the Centre has procured some modern sophisticated instruments viz. HPLC, GC, AAS, Flame Photometer etc to conduct study on plant physiology and biochemistry, seed physiology and plant growth and development.  The Centre is also well equipped for collection of meteorological data.  For processing of data, the Centre has computer facilities.  Recently the Centre has taken up strengthening its Biotechnology Unit acquiring necessary equipments for this purpose.

A small library is also housed in the Centre which contains important reference books. This facility is frequently used by the researchers from other departments and institutions.  The “Prof. K.K. Nanda Memorial Hall” of the Centre has a seating capacity of 250 with adequate audio-visual aids for seminars and conference.

In addition to its core funding within the University, the Centre receives major research grant from various R&D agencies in the form of research projects.
