Departmental Profile

Physics, as a discipline, has been an integral part of H.N.B. Garhwal University since its early years. The Department of Physics, H.N.B. Garhwal University, has been developing as a nucleus for postgraduate and research activities since its establishment in 1973. The department offers quality teaching at the undergraduate, postgraduate, and research levels, with a focus on both theoretical and experimental physics. M.Sc. courses were initially started at the Srinagar campus, which was later extended to the Tehri Campus in 1990. Well-equipped laboratories help students to gain practical knowledge and develop scientific skills.

The Department of Physics, SRT Campus, Badshahi Thaul, Tehri, currently offers four-year undergraduate and two-year postgraduate programs (under the NEP-2020) with a semester-based examination system.  Admission to undergraduate programs is based on CUET merit, whereas admission to postgraduate studies is based on the university entrance exam. The Department has a solid research foundation and provides a Ph.D. degree program.

The Physics Department actively promotes research in various areas of physics. Faculty members and research scholars are engaged in studies in Nuclear Physics, Radiological Physics, Radiation Protection, Material Science, and Condensed Matter Physics. These academic programmes prepare students for careers in teaching, research, industry, and higher education. The faculty members are experienced and supportive, guiding students in academics and research activities.

The department regularly organises seminars, workshops, and scholarly discussions to enhance awareness among students about the latest developments in physics and to strengthen their research skills. These activities help create a vibrant academic atmosphere and encourage students to think critically and creatively. Through collaborative research and academic activities, the department contributes to advancing scientific knowledge and fostering a research culture at the university.

The Department has successfully completed more than 20 major research projects funded by various agencies. The faculty members have published many peer-reviewed research papers in various journals of international repute and have presented research papers at National and International conferences in India and abroad.

The department has undertaken collaborative work with various national and international universities and institutes. The faculty members and research students have travelled extensively abroad to countries such as Japan, Germany, Italy, Austria, France, Poland, Australia, Canada, Turkey, Taiwan, Singapore, Switzerland, the UK, and the USA for scientific and research programs, seminars and post-doctoral work.

Campus Location

H.N.B. Garhwal University, SRT Campus, Badshahi Thaul, is situated along the route between Chamba and New Tehri at a distance of 3 km from Chamba. It is one of the brightest spots of the district Tehri Garhwal, at an elevation of 1676 meters. Positioned on the Delhi-Gangotri national highway, the area offers one of the most spectacular views of snow-capped Himalayas and the enriching Bhagirathi Valley. The university campus itself lies on an east-facing ridge, surrounded by dense forests of oak and pine. It is approximately 8 km from New Tehri, a newly developed, master-planned township at an elevation of 1,900 meters and serving as the district headquarters of Tehri Garhwal. The famous Tehri dam, along with a huge lake between the mountains, is located 20 km from the university campus and is a recent addition to the tourist attractions in the region.

The nearest airport is Jolly Grant Airport in Dehradun, located about 80 km from the university campus. The closest railway station is Rishikesh, approximately 65 km away; however, Haridwar, at 90 km, is often more convenient due to its strong rail connectivity with major cities across India. The Badshahi Thaul campus is well linked by road to key towns in the Garhwal region, including Haridwar, Rishikesh, Dehradun, Mussoorie, and Uttarkashi. Regular bus services, along with private taxis and jeeps, operate from these locations to Chamba and New Tehri. Travel time to Badshahi Thaul is about 3 hours by bus from Haridwar and Dehradun, and around 2 hours from Rishikesh.
