Swami Ram Teerth Campus (SRT Campus) Tehri

Swami Ram Teerth Campus, Badshahi Thaul, Tehri, is one of the three campuses of Hemvati Nandan Bahuguna Garhwal Central University. The Campus is named after the great monk, philosopher, mathematician, and poet of India, Swami Ram Teerthji (1873-1906). This institution is the premier institute of higher learning in the catchment area of Tehri Dam, the largest rock-fill dam in Asia. It is located 65 kilometres from Rishikesh on the Rishikesh-Gangotri National Highway, near the hilly town of Chamba, from where the Campus can be reached with a 3-kilometre drive. Situated at the height of 5600 feet above sea level, the University Campus is surrounded by lush green cedar, pine, oak, and rhododendron trees. The Campus is spread over a total area of 25 acres of land and is surrounded by the middle Himalayan ranges.

This campus has played a pivotal role in shaping the careers and personalities of innumerable students, many of whom have brought laurels to the campus, university, state, and country alike. Ever since its inception in 1969 as the first Government Degree College of Tehri district, this campus has gone through several phases of transition. It has undergone a metamorphosis from an erstwhile Government Degree College to a constituent college and later as one of the premium campuses of Garhwal University and to its present-day transformation as a Hemvati Nandan Bahuguna Garhwal Central University campus since 2009. Initially, the campus was established in old Tehri at the confluence of the rivers Bhagirathi and Bhilangana. Due to the construction of Tehri Hydroelectric Dam, the campus was shifted from the now-submerged old Tehri Town to Badshahi Thaul in the year 2000. The land for the present new campus was acquired by THDC India Ltd in lieu of the old campus submerged due to the construction of Tehri Dam and its reservoir. The new campus was constructed at the cost of Rs. 30 Crores in 1998, covering a construction area of about 30000 sq mts. The campus has been constructed with state-of-the-art technology, encompassing all infrastructural facilities, including an Administrative Block, Library, Classrooms, Laboratories, Hostels, Canteen, and residences for faculty and staff members.

Different Schools, such as Sciences, Life Science, Earth Science, Social Science, Languages, Law, Commerce, and Education, have been continuously shaping the careers of the students. Not only classroom studies but also activities outside related to social services, sports, culture, and other co-curricular activities find better performance with the ablest guidance and supervision of the faculty members and non-teaching staff of this Campus. Besides enrollment in graduate and postgraduate courses, a sizable number of students have been attracted to research works in different areas of specializations of different subjects not only from the nearby area but also from different States of India.

The nearest airport (linked to Delhi) is Jollygrant (Dehradun), located 80 km from SRT Campus. Rishikesh is the nearest railway station, 65 km away. However, Haridwar, 90 km away, is more convenient as it is well-connected to all major cities of India by rail. The SRT Campus, Badshahi Thaul, is well-connected by road to all important stations of Garhwal Division like Haridwar, Rishikesh, Dehradun, Mussoorie, Uttarkashi, and other parts of the region. Frequent bus services as well as private taxis and jeeps are available from these places to Chamba and New Tehri. It takes about 3 hours to reach Badshahi Thaul by bus from Haridwar and Dehradun, and about 2 hours from Rishikesh.
