The Department of Home Science was first established in the year 1987 in the Faculty of Arts at the Swami Ram Tirth Campus at Old Tehri. The students thereafter got an opportunity to choose and study Home Science as one of the subjects for earning a degree in Bachelor of Arts. Ten years later, from 1997 onwards the Department began to enroll students interested in pursuing their post graduate studies in Home Science. Seats at the post graduate level are limited and students can secure admission only on merit basis. While the at the Under Graduate level the students pursue a three-year degree course, at the Post Graduate level they study for a two-year course and earn a Masters of Arts degree in Home Science.

Today the Department is almost twenty three years old and well-stocked with laboratory equipment and computers. The students study papers from the five disciplines of Home Science – Food and Nutrition, Human Development, Textiles and Clothing, Extension and Communication and Resource Management. At the Under Graduate level students study a total of six theory papers along with practical work in each year. At the Post Graduate level the students study a total of ten theory papers and practical work in each paper in each year.
