About us
The inception of the Botany department came into existence with the establishment of HNB Garhwal University in the year 1973. Prior to this it was a department in Birla Govt. Degree College since 1962 with UG level teaching only. Since then, under the able leadership, the department with untiring work of the teachers, researchers and employees has made remarkable progress both in teaching and research. In 1904 the Department started PG courses in Microbiology. At present the department is well equipped to impart undergraduate teaching in Botany and post-graduate teaching both in Botany and Microbiology.
The department is also known for outstanding research activities particularly in the field of Himalayan vegetational wealth including Ecology and Conservation, Taxonomy, Palynology, Mycology and other thrust areas of plant sciences from Lesser to Higher Himalaya. Recently the department has initiated research in different aspects of Microbiology- industrial and clinical microbiology. Besides these, the department is also providing quality education through specialization courses at P.G. level in different emerging areas viz., Biodiversity and Conservation, Forest Ecology, Remote Sensing Techniques and Applications, Melissopalynology Plant Health Management and Current Trends in Microbiology.
