Department of  History, Ancient India History, Culture and Archaeology

The subject of  History  was introduced in 1962  at  the under graduate level at  Birla Govt. College.  he Department of Ancient India History  Culture  and Archaeology  was  introduced   in HNB Garhwal  University in 1976.  Since than, the Department has   developed  as a centre of teaching  and research in the  different areas of History and Archaeology particularly focusing on Uttarakhand Archaeology.

The Department right from its inception has carried out an extensive  research on  and also archaeological exploration and excavation programme in the Central Himalayan region.

In 1987 the Department was selected for participation in the Departmental Research Support (DRS) programme of the UGC. In 1993 it was elevated into Department under Special Assistance Programme(SAP).

Museum of Himalayan Archaeology and Ethnography

        The Department has also  established its own Museum in 1980  for  preserving the Himalayan  cultural heritage, traditional folk crafts and arts  from past to present . The Museum houses  the explored and excavated artifacts, teracotta's, pottery,  skeletal remains, metal implements sculptures and other antiquities discovered in the mid-central Himalayan region as well as from other parts of the country .It  also has  a rich collection  of manuscripts, literature, paintings, periodicals, newspapers, local records etc.
       
        The ethnographic gallery houses the  traditional  and local   material   which are either in vogue in the villages or  which    have vanished  in present day Garhwal. The museum has also developed a  most  modern   photographic  section  having a    large collection of  photographs ,slides and presently making efforts to develop a  digital archives of the photographs.The  drawing section  is  also equipped with   modern drawing   tools and field equipments like Total Station and GPS for field  survey.
       
        The museum also has a rich library having a  large collection of  books belonging to all the field  of  Himalayan, History ,Culture , Archaeology and Art and Architecture  etc. Keeping in view  the future needs of the museum a new building is under construction  at Chauras campus.
