The Department of Geology was established at Srinagar Campus in 1975 at Undergraduate level, and Post-graduate course was started in 1977. The Department of Geology was also established at Tehri campus in 1986 and elevated to the Post Graduate level in 2003. Later the subject was also introduced at undergraduate level in Pauri campus. The Department offers special papers like Sedimentology, Environmental Geology, Glaciology, Remote Sensing, Micropaleontology and Petroleum Geology at Post-graduate level.
 

The Department has a strong research base and the faculty members have been actively engaged in research in the diverse aspects of Himalayan Geology as well as peninsular India. Major thrust areas for the research in the Department are Palaeontology (vertebrate, invertebrate & micropalaeontology), Hydrology, Glaciology, Geomorphology, Quaternary Geology, Palaeoclimates, Palaeoseismology, Disaster Management, Remote Sensing, Morpho-tectonics & Landslides in Uttarakhand Himalaya & peninsular India, and Natural Hazards & their Mitigation.
 

The Department has established laboratories with latest equipments procured under the various research programmes. The Department has also been identified under the DST-FIST programme for strengthening the research facilities under which a well furnished Computer lab with GIS and IRDSA software’s has been set up. Besides some other sophisticated equipments like GPR, Petrothin and petrological microscope have also been added in the department.
 

During the year 2011-12 the faculty members have published 16 research papers in journals of national and international repute and have participated in 04 Seminars/Workshops/Conferences. The Department has 03 ongoing research projects and has completed 01 during the year The faculty of the Department was actively associated with organization of INSPIRE Science Camps during November-December 2011-12.
